Skyping with Second Graders in India!

Hi Room 203 families,

Yesterday was such an exciting day! We Skyped with a 2nd grade class at Shanti Bhavan Children's Project in India! All kids were stoked about the Skype call. First, our class read The Hungry Caterpillar then Shanti Bhavan students read a book they are currently studying in their English class.

Next, we had a chance to ask each other questions. Students were thrilled to hear that they had a lot of the same interests in books, movies, food, and sports! As I taught our class before the Skype lesson, we are all "Same, same, but different." We are alike in more ways than we are different and our differences are what make us special. I believe it's important for students to realize these similarities and differences from an early age to help increase their global awareness and appreciation for diversity.

Since we had to end our Skype call unexpectedly due to the fire drill, Shanti Bhavan sent us a sweet video saying goodbye! We hope to Skype with them again soon!

Until next time,

Ms. Wertheim

Ms. Wertheim's Class at ACS Board Meeting

Hi Room 203 families,

I just wanted to remind everyone about our exciting event this Monday night at the Asheville City Schools Board Meeting!

Your child has been given the opportunity to showcase his/her learning at the Asheville City Schools monthly board meeting this Monday, October 6th at 6:30 p.m.

I am asking that students please arrive at 6:15! Our class will be showing the Board how we integrate science and technology with literacy through a Comprehension Toolkit lesson.

I will be demonstrating the lesson for the Board and your child will have the chance to show what they've learned by modeling the lesson along with me.   It will be a science lesson about nonfiction text features and how they help us learn when reading nonfiction texts about States of Matter.

The Board meeting will be held in the board room at Asheville City Schools Central Office. All students who attend will be given a homework pass and 5 purple tickets! Most importantly, this is an incredible opportunity for your child to showcase his/her learning and feel proud of all their hard work so far this year.

If you have not already done so, please send back the yellow form with your child to let me know whether you will be attending. Feel free to call, email, or send in a note with any questions or comments you may have. As always, thank you so much for all you do to help support your child's learning.

I hope to see you there tomorrow night!

News from Room 203 :)

Hi Room 203 families,

I hope everyone's week is off to a great start! Here's a quick snapshot of our week:

  • Reading- We are learning about Overall Structure (beginning, middle, and end) and continuing to practice Daily 5 Rotations (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work). I am excited about some of the new stations we added to Work on Writing and Word Work and the kids seem to love them, too! Students are practicing getting started right away, working the whole time, and building up stamina! Be on the lookout for a "Room 203 Productions" Daily 5 music video coming soon ;) If you want a preview, ask your son or daughter to sing our Daily 5 song.
  • Math- We are working on Make 10, Base 10 blocks, and Combinations of 10. We also include time and money as part of our daily routine.
  • Fundations- We wrapped up Unit 1 and will be starting Unit 2 next Monday! Fundations homework this week will be Unit 1 review words.
  • Writing- We are practicing the Writing Process (Prewrite, Draft, Revise, Edit, Publish) and right now students are in the Prewrite phase for their personal narratives. We are practicing planning strategies including graphic organizers and brainstorming.
  • Science- We are still working on States of Matter! This year I will be using a website called Discovery Education where students will have individual assignments related to science content. If you'd like to see what this looks like, feel free to login as one of my students:
    • Go to discoveryeducation.com  The username is mswstudent and pw is CLX.2014. Once you're logged in, click on "assignments" and you will see helpful resources that I've assigned to my class. My newest assignment is the "States of Matter Board" at the very bottom of the assignments list. This digital bulletin board includes videos and text and is very engaging for the students! Later this month students will be creating their own digital boards summarizing what they've learned about States of Matter.
  • Social Studies- We are learning about community helpers. :)
Reminder- This Friday is Sports Team Spirit Day. (Go Asheville Bulldogs and TAR HEELS!) Your child may wear attire (no hats though, please) from his/her favorite sports team or bring in a book about the team.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or comments.

Thanks for stopping by,

Write with Wertheim: Fundations Guided Practice

Hello again Room 203 families,

I just wanted to let everyone know about some helpful Fundations resources available on my blog under the Fundations tab. On my Fundations page, you will find songs, videos, and tutorials for marking words. I also have guided lessons called "Write with Wertheim" (see example below) that students can follow along with for extra practice. All lessons can be found on my Fundations page. Be on the lookout for new lessons coming each week! This would be great practice before a unit test, or as a review of previous units. I hope this is helpful! As always, feel free to call or email me with any questions about Fundations.

 Thanks so much!

Super Science

Hi Room 203 families, I hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend! I wanted to share some photos from our Super Science Day on Friday. We started out our morning by exploring states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. Students practiced using their science notebooks to record observations at each station. They loved it!

In the afternoon, we took a trip to the Media Center to participate in our first STEAM lesson of the year! STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. In this lesson students explored different careers in STEAM (including architecture, marine engineering, aerospace engineering, culinary arts, fashion design, video game design and car design). Then they discussed the importance of teamwork in all the careers, remembering that "you can't have STEAM without TEAM."

Finally, the kids worked in teams of three to design and build "tall towers" using only toothpicks, spaghetti, and gumdrops. Their only rule was that it had to be free-standing. They worked completely as a team with no adult help. It was incredible to see what they came up with!
This is a lesson we'd all love to do again! :)

Until next time,

Sitting Still Like a Frog: The Importance of Mindfulness Practice in Schools

Parents, this is a post from my education blog, Teach and Touch Lives. Enjoy :)

A frog is a remarkable creature. It is capable of enormous leaps, but it can also sit very, very still. Although it is aware of everything that happens in and around it, the frog tends not to react right away. The frog sits still and breathes, preserving its energy instead of getting carried away by all the ideas that keep popping into its head. The frog sits still, very still, while it breathes.

My first year of teaching was absolutely incredible but it was also very exhausting. I got to work early and stayed late and spent most of my free time working on lesson plans or thinking about how to improve my classroom. The first semester, I left no time for myself. My life was a constant stream of Go, Go, Go. During winter break I had the major realization that in order to be the best teacher I could be, I had to make time for myself. I had to relax. I had to find time to just be still.

As a full-time dream chaser, this wasn't easy for me. I found that it was difficult to do nothing--I felt like I always had to be doing something. That's when yoga became an important aspect of my life. I made a commitment to myself to practice yoga more often and I soon began doing it every single morning. I noticed such a huge change in my energy and attitude. I was able to focus better, teach better, and sleep better. I soon started practicing yoga in the morning with my students with the hope that it would help them prepare for their busy days. I wasn't sure what to expect but they ended up LOVING it and it soon became part of our morning routine.

This summer one of my friends introduced me to a very special book: Sitting Still Like a Frog by Eline Snel which emphasizes the importance of mindfulness exercises for kids. Eline writes "The practice of mindfulness at any age is both simple and profound. Above all, it involves learning--learning how to cultivate greater self-awareness and greater awareness of others and the world."

"Because mindfulness is really about attention and the awareness that arises from paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally, it is at its core universal. It does not belong to any culture or tradition or belief system. And, as we have seen, it is basic to learning anything. For this reason, and especially given the growing evidence of its efficacy in different domains, more and more teachers...are bringing mindfulness to K-12 education"

Last week I introduced my new second graders to yoga and this week I am going to introduce them to mindfulness using helpful exercises from Sitting Still Like a Frog. My goal is to practice yoga three days per week and mindfulness exercises twice per week. I am confident that integrating this into our morning routine will help calm and prepare my seven-year-olds for the busy school days ahead of them. Do you practice mindfulness or yoga with your students or children? Comment below to let me know!

Namaste,
